Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (Novel) - Vol. 7 Ch. 16

And you thought you'd never see more Haganai again~ I'd actually been holding back until I knew i'd be able to release more frequently since this chapter kinda ends on a cliffhanger (obviously since it's the last chapter in the volume) so as to minimize your suffering(?). Anyway, enjoy Yozora's hate of King Lear with the links below:

  20. Kodaka is hiding something very big!

He is in love with one of the girls within the neighbors club.

Kodaka always complains and thinks negative, but there is one girl that is able to make him happy...

  21. This chapter cements Haganai as the best harem story I've ever seen. It's the only one I know of that actually examines how a harem situation could exist and how fucked up it would be, while keeping it funny and not going way dark.

(Of course, it is sill ridiculous that all the lonely outcast girls who don't think they can do any better are super-cute)

    1. Agree with you. This story really shows what would happen if a harem situation took place in real life (a bit like School Days, but less...traumatizing)

  22. Well, I don't think that Kodaka is actually interested in maintaining a unclear relationship situation. He has obviously some big anxieties.

  23. To all those who blame Kodaka you need to get your head out of your ass, the dude has known seclusion hell for years on end, and for a crappy reason like his appearance, this is the first time he felt things like friendship since Yozora, what is wrong with the initial mentality of wanting to maintain that? Think of it this way, If Kodaka chose or Sena, or vise versa with Yozora, do you think the group would be the same? Granted he has to make a choice, stuff should happen, and things will go down the LN series is not over yet, but his initial way of thinking is something i have no problem with, if anything it has more depth than 99% of harem MCs.

  24. The reason why Kodaka never had any friends is not his hair - it's his personality.

He thinks negative and he always complains - even about persons he loves, like his own sister. He has problems trusting other people.

Kodaka won't accept someone as a friend if he is not really convinced that he can really trust this person.

    1. No, it's not that he has problems trusting other people. It's that he is never sure if someone reciprocates the same feelings he has for them.
He cannot go forward as he is never sure about how others feel about him. So people have to rech him fist before he does.

  25. I've always thought that everything in small print was stuff that Kodaka actually heard and forced himself to pretend otherwise. I mean, it's in first person. If it gets on the page it's got to be something Kodaka knows.

It's funny that in this chapter he actually doesn't hear something, but he has to admit he knows what it was.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Kodaka's probably scared shitless to move anywhere from where he is.

If he picks Sena over Yozora or vice versa (assuming he's even vaguely aware of how Sena recognizes him as a romantic interest or how Yozora wants to be the closest person he has), this might ruin his relationship with the other one; and there's no telling whether he picked it right.

If the Neighbour's club members realize that their purpose has already been realized and they found friends, what'll happen to the Neighbours Club? And to the group itself? How long will they remain as such, and whether this realization will really be a step in the right direction?

I get where Kodaka's coming from, but he's a bit too negative about life - sometimes, change is a good thing, and taking a step forward may bring great results.

    1. Well, while I do think he's a coward, he's also thinking about everyone. If he acknowledges that the girls like him, if he he tries to date one, anything that pushes his relationship with any or all of them forward will effect everyone, including Kobato and Maria.

For a series that's also so damn funny, its interesting to finally have some depth and development happening. Personally I want him to end up with Rika, or even Sena, since Yozora just comes off as too...bitchy.

      Delete
    2. I think he hasn't realise that the girls like him. What he doesn't want is to acknowledge them as friends. I mean, he is a harem MC after all, he wouldn't notice their feelings that easily, if he did the LN might be close to an end.
Yozora bitchy? Sena plays eroge and rika asks for intercourse. Yoroza is the most innocent girl in there -3-

      Delete
    3. Yozoroa innocent ?
You should read the "Short Story Relay" again..She is the one with the darkest mind and she's the pessimist #01.

I think she mentioned there is a difference between love and r4pe, but somesome "innocent" wouldn't even talk about something like that

      Delete
    4. when i said innocent i meant the opposite of pervert, as she is extremely shy when topics like kissing or sex come up.
well, maybe that wasn't the best word to describe her, but still i like her over rika and sena

      Delete
    5. Yozora is so shy in terms of romance because she don't have any trust in other people.

Loners with such anxieties like Yozora won't find friends and partners in their life if they don't accept help.

I suppose Yozora will be alone for the rest of her life at the end of the story because she did not change at all.

      Delete
    6. You do realize she explicitly requested sex from Kodaka in Chapter 8, right?

      Delete
  27. Thank you! and poor Kodaka :(

  28. The LN might be narrated in a first person point of view, but it's not like he knows everything it's written. As you read the dialogues with that small text you think he didn't hear it. Now you know he actually did.

    ReplyDelete
  29. But I did think he heard it.

  30. The last released OVA gave something of a hint how Kodaka's story might end.

Kodaka's story might end after he found love, but before that he have to find a friend.

Kodaka already mentioned that he first want a friend, that he can have a girlfriend (during the date in Vol. 6).

So...? At the end of Vol. 8 Kodaka chose Rika as a friend and in the next volume he will find love - and the story ends! :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. this is how i think the story will continue:
Rika: isn't it time you give us a response, kodaka-senpai?
Kodaka: Okay... We should all be friends!
    R: ...
    K: ...
R: It's that all? What about our feelings?
K: You wanted us to be friends right? Don't need to be shy. hahaha
    R: (´・ω・`)

He doesn't realise they like him after all. and so the story continues...

  32. You people can call him a coward or insult him or whatever, but i honestly feel bad for Kodaka, you people make it sound like his scenario is easy, i mean i honestly don't get why people bash on Harem MCs as much as they do, are they dense? damn straight, should they bang every girl without hesitation like 99% of fandom says, hell no! There is a thing called feelings, and perverted sickos aside they are required in such relationships. If he didn't have such a personality he wouldn't have a harem in the first place because he would blend in with the rest of the people who question why he has a harem in the first place, ironic isn't it?

In any case don't know what happens in volume 8 since i can't read the original so i'm waiting for translations, but i would guess that he makes Rika his first friend and volume 9 concentrates on his actual love relationships, because everyone knew Rika and Yukimura had little to no shot, it was always Sena vs Yozora, and personally while i like both characters i think Sena is more fitting since she represents change, the future, a bright one at that, while Yozora represents the past and everything Kodaka is trying to change about himself.

    1. Amen to that. One of the best analysis of Kodaka's character.

  33. YESSSS! I've been waiting for this (not just the new chapter, but the "Kodaka" chapter). Go-go gadget character development!

I think its kinda interesting b/c imo Kodaka has low self esteem (e.g. he frequently thinks what he wants to say but doesn't say it, gets flustered easily, afraid of change, etc.) despite having a lot of manly/cool characteristics (can hold down a house, strong enough to hold off bullies, has a freakin' harem, etc.)

Compared to a lot of male protagonists, who go from losers to bad@sses, Kodaka is already a bad@ss. He just needs to get some confidence!

And wow, there are so many comments O_O

  37. God damn it, Kodaka.

This chapter seems to imply that all the text in the past that was in smallfont is stuff he actually did hear but pretended not to, and it's just him closing his eyes to an unwanted reality, rather than a narrative device that allows us to hear more than the character does. In a way, it was its own narrative device, wasn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Just like a chapter in this volume indicated Yozora really did fall for me, while Rika is skyrocketing, she has zero chance at being his partner but she has a solid chance to be his first real friend and this point that may very well be the most important, someone who truly understands him, and in that sense her love is the most genuine despite her weird behavior because she likes the real him, the him that the rest can't see. Seeing his faults and accepting them, mad props to Rika. Kodaka could have been said to slip but i will postpone because i believe he will come around and at the same time he reasons for fear is believable.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I've always suspected he was, for lack of better words, playing dumb. It never really felt like Kodaka was the stereotypical "Dense" character and some of his actions seemed to imply he did hear what some of the characters said and his internal monologues after the fact was him attempting to rationalize it away.

I'm so stoked that the author has decided to take what I think is probably the "hard" path, as far as LN literature goes.

  40. Many thanks vexed, I'm curious as to how long it'll take you to do volume 8 though

    I'msoimpatient.

  41. Kodaka is not dense. He knows exactly what he wants.

    He wants Sena.

Kodaka want friends but his main motivation to be in the club is Sena. Kodaka is aiming for perfection, he wants to be a flawless and popular person like her. He adores and praises her very much, just look at the whole Vol. 7 how he describes her.

Every time Sena improves herself Kodaka likes her more and more.

Kodaka always thinks negative and complains. He is very unhappy because of this bad habit. He even complains about persons he really loves, like his own sister. He wants to get rid of this flaw and so he is interested in getting in contact with outstanding personalities - very good and honest people. He hopes if he stick to those persons he can learn something from them and can become a better person himself. Kodaka is very focused on the personality of the girls and he points out character traits.

Sena is also his only love interest and he is very faithful to her, he completely ignores the other girls. He has big anxieties and he can't tell her that he loves her (remember: he always thinks negative). He needs more time and so he tries to continue the club activities as long as possible.

And now there comes Rika and asks him "Aren't we already friends?". He runs away because she is actually interfering with his plans. :)

Kodaka was lying the whole time - just like Yozoro! The purpose of the club is not to find friends - it's to find love! And even for Sena it's just the same. And with her confession in Vol. 8 the club is now finished.

  43. Kodaka definitely knows more than he has let on to the others, or even to himself. However, Rika has been even more aware of the circumstances in the neighbor's club and has been consciously playing her role, not to satisfy herself but for Kodaka. She even agrees to keep playing that role for his sake, although I wonder how much longer she'll be willing to do so. I think that this interaction makes it clear that she wants change, and wants more from Kodaka, even if it's just an acknowledged friendship (though I doubt she'd mins something more).

I don't see the series ending too soon as Sena, Yukimura, and Rika still have room to grow. Yozora seems unwilling to change and I wonder how she'll recover from her recent crises. Also, I think we'll be seeing more involvement from the StuCo pres and treasurer.

Anyways, thanks so much Vexed for your hard work on this series. This is one of the best LN's I've read and your translation makes it even more enjoyable.
